Cyber's Production Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CybersProduction. Disk Mounted Graphics or DMG is considered as the one most crucial component of Mac system which contains the graphical record of your entire disk data. Using this signification features you can easily mount and manage your Mac volumes as well the all the data stored on your hard drive. If it's different, try redownloading the file. If the md5 is the same, also try following steps 2, 5, and 6, if applicable, from the guide linked to in the first post. If all of that seems to be fine, see if you can open the dmg in safe mode.
I ran into an interesting macOS error while working with a customer a couple of weeks ago. I didn't find a lot of good search results addressing the issue, so I decided to write up a post about it myself.
The error was as the screenshot above shows; trying to open a dmg (disk image), macOS showed the error 'no mountable file systems'. If you see the 'no mountable file systems error' while opening a dmg, here's what you should try:
In most cases, the downloaded dmg file is actually corrupt or had an error downloading. If possible, try downloading the dmg again, turning off any download assistant plug-ins you may have. You can try downloading the file in a different browser as well. Or if you don't need to be logged in to the site to download the file and you want to be fancy, you can try
curl -O url
in Terminal to download the file. (There's an example of that in my screenshot below.)Reboot your Mac if you haven't already tried that. Apparently there is an issue sometimes after opening too many dmg files, that is fixed with a reboot.
Try mounting the DMG on the command line in Terminal. We will at least get some sort of useful error message to go on if it still fails:
Open Terminal: In Spotlight, the search magnifying glass at the upper right corner of your screen, search for Terminal, and press enter to open the Terminal app.
Type
hdiutil attach -verbose
into the terminal. Add a space at the end, but don't press enter yet.Drag the dmg file from your Finder window onto the Terminal window and let go. This will fill in the location of the dmg file into your Terminal window.
- Press enter.
macOS Sierra (10.12) and earlier is not able to mount the new Apple File System (APFS). So if you're on macOS Sierra (10.12) or earlier and you ran hdiutil and see references to
Apple_APFS
or error112
, the issue is likely legitimate incompatibility, and this disk image won't open on this Mac without an update to the operating system. Here's an example of the end of
hdiutil attach -verbose
output that shows an APFS error due to an older version of macOS:Think about if you have any kind of security policies on this machine to prevent writing to external drives (thumb drives, optical drives, etc). I haven't seen this one in action, but I read about this being a possibility while researching the issue.
Another suggestion added by a reader (thank you, Markus!) is that filesystem errors on your main Mac drive could be the cause of the disk image mounting errors. Here are instructions from Apple for scanning and repairing errors using Disk Utility. Note that in order to scan and repair errors on your main Macintosh HD drive, you'll need to reboot your Mac into recovery mode. You'll want to choose Disk Utility in the utilities listed in the recovery mode menu.
A new discovery from a reader (thank you, Colby!) is that APFS DMGs won't mount if you're booted in macOS booted in Safe Mode. (Who knew!?!) If you're not sure if you're in safe mode, select the Apple menu > About This Mac > System Report button, then select the 'Software' heading from the left column. To exit safe mode, restart your Mac, without holding Shift during startup. Or, if you previously set your Mac to always boot into safe mode using
nvram
, turn off safe mode and have your Mac boot normally on the terminal:Open Terminal: In Spotlight, the search magnifying glass at the upper right corner of your screen, search for Terminal, and press enter to open the Terminal app.
Type/paste
sudo nvram boot-args='
and press enter.Restart your Mac.
Hello, I have an important backup DMG file that I can't mount. When I try, I get this error...'No Mountable File Systems'.
I have tried the following with no success...
- repairing the DMG in Disk Utility.
- converting the DMG in Disk Utility to a R/W image.
- Repair in Data Rescue 3
- Repair in Disk Warrior
- Repair in File Salvage (this actually recovered a single mp3 file, so this makes me think the data is still there)
- Repair in Stellar Phoenix
- Repair in Disk Drill
I have read on one of these forums (I can't seem to find it anymore) that someone had a similar issue and someone helped them through a lot of digging around in the broken file (something to do with headers?)...and in the end they managed to repair the broken DMG file. I would really like to repair this file, so just in case someone who knows how to fix this sort of thing, I've shared the file here...
files.me.com/jeffvandyck/x4qv9c
I have a few other files like this and would really like to recover those as well. I'm relatively technical, and once I understand what I'm looking for I can try to fix the others.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Cheers,
Jeff

No Mountable File Systems Dmg Mac Fix
I deleted several .mov files a while back that were encrypted into a .dmg file. Using Disk Drill, I was able to recover 5 of these files, roughly 500-900 MB each and successfully moved them to my desktop. When I try to open the .dmg file, the dreaded error message 'no mountable file systems' shows up. I have tried various fixes based on searches and none have worked. Are these files just corrupted and unreadable, or is there a way to fix?
Thanks for the obvious question. I mean it. The very same thought came to me this morning and, sure enough, I had booted into another drive--my old one that, of course, had the old desktop, etc.
It didn't dawn on me that this was the case since I hadn't set it as a boot drive but I guess in the course of all the restarts I did, it got switched.
I'm back to normal again.I made an image (dmg file) of my computer as a backup and now I need to recover that file. When I try to open it I get 'no mountable file systems'. Is there a utility that will let me open this file so I can access the data?
Hello! You're unlikely to recover a bad disk image. About the only thing to try is to open disk utility and drag the icon to the upper left pane when your hard drives are listed and see if you can run a 'repair disk' function on it. Did you create the image of the disk using disk utility with the intent of restoring a drive? Tom
I'm having an issue that seems to come up before with others. Every DMG file I have tried downloading is corrupt and is giving me invalid checksum etc..
This isn't limited to one specific machine as I have an iMac and 2 macbooks all try and make the same download on the same network and all 3 are getting the same issues. i've rebooted the modem / router and nothing!
This is really frustrating as I can't get photoshop to work without installing java and even that 60meg download is getting corrupt.
Routerwise i have a netgear WGR614v9 (seems like a piece of crap) and can't get the firmware to update.
This is really frustrating as i need to work from home but can't even install the software i need to use.
Anyone figure out anything?Add me to the list. Running Mountain Lion on my MBP and Lion on my Mac Mini. The MBP is connecting to the Internet via wireless and the mac mini is wired. Tried rebooting the cable modem and switch to see if that made a difference but it didn't. I cannot understand why unless there's been an update to lion which prevents dmg files from opening a.k.a. The bzip issue that affected osx 10.3 and earlier.
All other file types are fine, it just seems to be affecting dmg files. Also, if it was corruption over the wire then surely web sites wouldn't load properly.
Confused!Since upgrading to Firefox 32.0, my Acronis Backup stops with the error message
'Backup of file or folder c:UsersRobertAppDataLocalMozillaFirefoxProfiles<Firefox.Profile>Cache' failed. File or folder does not exists.'
The problem no longer occurs after running chkdsk which implies a file system corruption, but it re-occurs when opening and closing Firefox.
Note that I use hibernation (i.e. I open and close the browser, hibernate, wake up and then note the file system corruption)Yes, I have checked that the folder is not explicitly specified. Also, after running chkdsk, the backup runs successfully, even if the folder does not exist.
I have run some more tests, and am now very confident that this is indeed a bug.
Reproduction:
1) Start & Close Firefox
2) Run Backup --> Error
3) Create an empty folder named 'Cache'
4) Run Backup --> OK
5) Start & Close Firefox --> Folder 'Cache' is renamed to 'Cache.Trash<Number>'
6) Run Backup -> Error
repeat as desired
I have found a temporary fix: When I remove the delete permission on my manually created 'Cache' folder, Firefox does create a 'Cache.Trash<Number>' folder, but cannot delete the Cache folder. The backup will run in this case.I'm trying to restore from backup using Time Machine. I'm getting an error that either my password is incorrect or the file is corrupt. Pretty sure about the password, so...
I dragged the Sparsebundle into Disk Repair and hit Verify. I got 'Verify Failed, Unknown File System'.
It there a way to fix this??
Thanks for commentsNot as far as I am aware. If the image mounts but cannot be repaired I suppose you could try using recovery software but it would probably be easier to erase your TM drive and start from scratch.
General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.Hi,
I have a 2010 Macbook Pro, 13' with a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo. I have OS X Mavericks, along with a copy of Windows 8 on my bootcamp partition.
I have a recurring problem, which happened three times already. It started in July. So I turned the computer on (after it beeing turned off normally), and I was just blocked on the booting screen, i.e the gray screen with the apple (but no loading wheel). So I had no other choice but to press the on/off button for several seconds, until the computer turned off.
Then I tried to turn it on again, and it started in safe boot mode. When the loading bar was full, it would turn off on its own.
I tried to use the Disk repair utility in the recovery partition, but it displayed a message like 'Disk cannot be repaired, reinstall Mac OS'
Fortunately, I have my Windows partition, which I could still boot on. So I was able to backup almost all the data I needed. I said almost, because with some files, the copy-paste process would just fail, telling me that the files were corrupted.
I then reinstalled Mavericks from scratch, and it worked perfectly... for three weeks. then I had the exact same problem. Same problem, same solution, I again lost a lot of time backing up and reinstalling, again losing some data on the road.
And back to the present, today, guess what, same problem ! So I am getting a bit tired of that, and given that college has started, I really don't have time to waste every three weeks for fixing that.
I would be really glad and thankful if you could help me with that issue.
Thank you,
GaetanThe startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
Make a 'Genius' appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.Problem with DMGs and error: 'No Mountable File Systems'
The files are not corrupt. The problem is occurring with all DMGs that are apparently formatted in MS-DOS FAT16. No the file will not mount with Disk utility or any other disk mounter programs I have found.
This is now the second time this occurred and now effects my MBP and my iMac. First time i spent days with Apple support and the only solution was ultimately back up the data, reformat the HD, start over from scratch and reload everything. That lasted about a month before the problem resurfaced and is now an issue on both iMac and MBP.
I tried to identify all the programs I installed immediately before the error, as I am convinced it is the result of a software conflict.
Recent programs includes:
1) upgrading from Parallels 5.5 to 6.0 on both machines.
2) using an HP secure II usb drive and setting up a secure disk.
3) installing new itunes 10
4) new update to Flip For Mac.
The files affected are downloaded dmgs, including personal brain and google earth, both which are formatted in FAT16.
Any help or thoughts? Apple has now spent hours trying and they say i now have to reformat and wipe and start over. That is unacceptable and based on pasted experience the problem is likely to repeat itself. having to wipe and rebuild a HD ever month is not an solution. i need to fid the root problem.
In the meantime, anyone got a real solution on how to extract the data for a DMG using a different method?
Message was edited by: remaiaWhere you able to find the solution, i am having the same problem, all was fine till i install some programs only same one i saw did we both did was flip4mac i uninstalled it but the problem is still there, i also restored and erased the hardrive but im not up to doing that all over again. If you found anything out let me know i would greatly appreciate it
I had Mac OS X Leopard running with Boot Camp (Windows Vista). I needed extra space for my Mac OS so I deleted the Windows partition using the Boot Camp Assistant. Then, I shut down the computer, but after I turned it on, there was the flashing question mark, which meant that the computer couldn't recognize the Macintosh operating system that was installed. Therefore, I put in the Mac OS Install Disk, and tried to repair the disk but it said invalid BS_jmpBoot in block 000000. Seeing this, I decided to reinstall Mac OS X, but backing up with Disk Utility: Create New Compressed .DMG Image before doing so. After a successful installation, I tried to mount the image, but it says No Mountable File System. I feel hopeless, because all of my precious data was backed up in that disk image. When I try to verify or repair that disk using Disk Utility, it says Unrecognized File System. Are all the files on that image corrupt and impossible to recover, or is it possible to recover those files (but of course, losing some files, since the image appears to be corrupt).
Again, if you cannot mount the image then there's no way to recover the files. If the image would mount then you could try repairing it with Disk Utility or try using recovery software to recover files from it. But if it doesn't mount then there's nothing you can do with it.
If you want to try you can see if recovery software can find files on it. See the following:
Basics of File Recovery
Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.

You can download trial versions of the software. The trials can be used to see if the software can recover anything, but then you must purchase the software to actually do any file recovery.I am running 10.3.9 - all my dmg files now come back with this warning: The following disk images failed to mount

ThanksHi,
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It really depends how you're acquiring these .dmg files. If you're saying that you've got some .dmg files on your Mac that you've had for some time and that you used to access and now cannot, then I'd be concerned that you've a disk problem. In this case I'd run First Aid from Disk Utility or run your Apple Hardware Test CD and see what responses you get. It never hurts to Repair Permissions as well... Oh, and verify your disk's SMART status - you'll find this by highlighting your HDD in the left-column in Disk Utility, and the SMART status is reported in the pane at the bottom. It should read Verified. Otherwise, I'd make a backup ASAP.
If you're saying that every .dmg file that you are downloading recently has reported this error, then it may be that these are simply corrupt, especially if they're all coming from the same source (e.g. P2P, the same website, etc.).
You may want to check out this thread at another discussions board. The reply from Silversleeves should help.
Good Luck.
SiR G.I was provided a link to dowload Fireworks CS3 for Mac. The link allowed me to connect to the adobe ftp server and downloaded a 1.1MB dmg for Fireworks for Mac. However, when I attempt to open the file I get the following error: 'The following disk images failed to mount, no mountable file systems'. Note the file size seems too small for the full program, but I have downloaded it twice with no error messages on downloading and same file size.
Previously posted under Fireworks but no responses....any ideas? You have an incomplete file. there is no way that a 1.1MB file could contain the app Fireworks. redownload the complete file and it will mount.
I have noticed with many DMG images I cannot open them. I constantly get an error 'no mountable file systems'.I sent the same DMG image to my friend on his Mac and he can open it, so it is on my side. I also have noticed my pen drive is not showing up on the desktop, but shows in disk utility. I have noticed these problems since I cloned and replaced my HD. I have also added a 50 GB partition to Boot Camp, if this should matter. Any idea??
repaired permissions and rebooted.
all ok nowCould someone help me here, I have this problem.
The reason for this was that I ran into some complications with my boot camp windows install and wanted to start over. After returning the boot camp FAT partition space to Mac OS X it froze while attempting to create a new boot camp partition. 'Boot Camp Assistant' suggested I backup my 'Macintosh HD' and re-partition my HD because 'some files could not be moved.' Ok so, I backed-up my 'Macintosh HD' volume to a DMG using Disk Utility selecting the volume and clicking new image icon, it is compressed, it is Leopard. I then booted with Leopard install DVD and began the restore process. Everything was working smoothly until the progress bar stopped animating, waited awhile and forced restart. When I restarted my internal HD had only an 'Applications' folder which ended its contents with a half copied iDVD.app preceded by 73 other apps successfully restored. Now worst of all my Backup DMG produces the 'No mountable file systems' error. Help, oh please help!

Message was edited by: Marcus SOk, here is the output. It shows there is a problem with the resource fork XML, just like yours Shad Guy. If only their were some specs available I could try to fix it myself. An Apple engineer could most likely fix this in 20 min.
Also, thanks for your help man, having people tell me to give up is the worst.

------------------------I was in the process of rebuilding my managers MacBook but I decided to make a full disc image before messing with any of her data. I plugged in a firewire hard drive and booted off my Leopard DVD. I selected the internal hard drive and clicked the new image button. Saved the image to the external. No errors were reported. Everything ran fine. Made a 50.3GB image file.
I them selected the internal HD and selected Restore and used our corp image file for and restored the internal drive with our image. I rebooted ran some updates joined it to the domain. Now it was ready for her user data. I went to mount the image of her data and it gives me 'No mountable files system'.
I have tried LOTS of things to get back at her data. I have used Data Rescue II, Disc Warrior, trying terminal commands listed in the following threads:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8036718
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1218394&tstart=0
When I do the command 'hdiutil udifxmldet <yourbrokenimage>' it tells me no XML data is present. Data Rescue II shows me all the files in the image but when I try to restore them all the data is 0 bytes. When I scavenge the data files it gives me files with random names and some data but a 2 page PDF file is 100MB and there is no file large enough to be her entourage database. So somehow things are kind of smushed together.
Is there any way to recover this data properly? He last backup, which she is responsible for doing on her own, was 6 weeks ago. But i know I will never hear the end of it if I lose 6 weeks of her data.
Please help if possible. Her MacBook is still under AppleCare and the Leopard DVD is a licensed retail copy though the computer is actually runnning 10.4.11 I used the Leopard dvd to make the image. And yes I tried opening the image with a leopard machine. If you failed to mount the image after initially creating the image (a bootable backup/clone would have been a better option); then, I surmise that her stuff is gone. Sorry, but I have nothing else to offer.
I am trying to download EndNoteX4 but keep getting the message 'no mountable file systems'. What does this mean and how do fix it?

I am really unsure as to what I am doing wrong.
Maybe you are doing nothing wrong and the problem is with the disk.
Use SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner
to clone your system to an external drive.
Then boot from your DVD go to Disk Utility and choose your entire drive > top icon in DIsk Utility.
Go to Erase tab. Choose format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Click on erase. Now, install Lion and when you get to setup assistant choose to migrate from your external drive.
This is slightly different than baltwo described and slighly longer but if there is any corruption on your disk a more through way to go, IMO.
What baltwo is saying is to clone your volume over to an external hard drive with CCC reformat and clone it back. This will defragment the files and make them all contiguous but will not address any directory problems.
Your choice. You can do it one way, then the other if it doesn't work out for you.
